Bourdieu and Patti Smith study circles: start 10.3.06 17.30pm

Chorus will run two parallel study circles. The idea is to meet once or twice a month to discuss the chosen material under relaxed and democratic, yet a bit theoretical, circumstances. The language used will mainly be English, but Finnish is also “allowed”. The meeting place is Uusi Ylioppilastalo, if anything else isn´t being announced.

Literature circle: Pierre Bourdieu´s work “Distinction: A Social Critique of the Judgment of Taste” is a cornerstone of all cultural studies. The book was written in 1979 and deals mostly with the aspects of cultural taste among French bourgeois. But Bourdieu´s main ideas are absolutely universal and can easily be applied, and are constantly being applied, when trying to understand popular culture, aesthetics and their role in society. Well known terms and theories such as “cultural capital” and “habitus” comes from Bourdieu and this is his most famous book.

Music circle: Parallel to the literature circle Chorus will host a music circle. What the F**K is that, you ask? Well, we are not quite sure but we’ll see. Basically, this is an attempt to go into a serious discussion about a central piece of popular art. The meetings will not be directed by anyone, yet we require that everybody have to get acquainted with the music we aim to discuss. The meetings will take place right after the literature circles, so you might participate in both or just one of them, as you please. The first artist in focus at the music circle will be a legendary lady who has been central for punks, beats and rocks: Patti Smith. She became early a radical and influential force and barrier breaker within rock, and is still going on. There were not too many models for female rock artists when Patti Smiths started her career in 1974 but she is today a model source of inspiration for numerous artists of all sexes. We will start exploring Patti Smiths collected works chronologically. The meetings will take right after the literature circle.
